Roof technology has evolved greatly over time. Not only have the materials gotten significantly better, but the tools used to inspect and design roofing systems have also greatly advanced.
In our special blog’s first half, Curb Appeal Exteriors discusses some of the technological advancements utilized by pros today:
Moisture Meters
These sensors detect the tiniest amounts of water on construction materials, so they’re especially useful in residential roofing projects.
Severe cases of moisture damage can be easily detectable because they leave visual evidence, like dark spots. Anyone who has a good working knowledge of mold growth knows that its existence is indicative of a damp environment. But when moisture levels are too low for human senses to recognize them, yet great enough to cause damage slowly but surely, these devices can help. Simplistic in design but innovative in functionality, modern models generate impressively accurate readings.
Thermal Imagers
They’re usually considered “cameras” because they take pictures of heat signatures – thermal energy emitted by objects. Strictly speaking, however, they’re sensors that spot infrared energy, not visible light. Infrared energy is imperceptible to the naked eye. Considering that extreme temperatures can be detrimental to construction materials, proper use of thermal imaging can help reduce your roof repair costs.
Drones
Flying a remote-controlled device with a built-in high-resolution camera provides a vivid 360-degree aerial view of the roof. Pictures alone can’t be used to diagnose problems, but they can say a lot about the structural integrity of any roofing system.
Roof Visualizers
When planning a roof replacement, visualization is helpful when exploring different design possibilities. Most, if not all, tools allow you to either upload an image of your actual home or edit a sample photo in the application’s library. With just a few clicks, you can see how numerous products will look when paired with certain siding and trim styles and colors.
We recommend the GAF Virtual Home Remodeler. It contains the brand’s extensive selection of asphalt shingles, as well as designer-picked color palettes. This tool lets you choose different times of the day or year to show how the roof changes in appearance depending on light intensity.
